This issue covers discussion threads on the topics of progress toward a heat and freeze-stable hepatitis B vaccine and next generation batteries for solar refrigeration. In the context of vaccine stability, Debra Kristensen answers a query on freeze stability for DPT and pentavalent vaccines.
In reply to Omesh Bharti's question about the applicability of the stabilization technologies to DPT and pentavalent vaccine, Debra Kristensen says:
The freeze stabilization technology should be broadly applicable to any vaccine containing aluminum adjuvant. We have preliminary laboratory data validating this for DPT and pentavalent vaccines. At the beginning of 2009, we published an article in Vaccine...
Does the autonomy tool recognize that added solar array can reduce the amount of battery storage required?
The autonomy tool does recognize that solar array size affects battery autonomy. A larger solar array will reduce the amount of battery (storage) required. The tool has been used to produce a table of tropical locations and the table includes three array oversize factors (i.e. 1.0, 1.1 and 1.25). A second method for using the autonomy tool is to input site specific, measured long-term daily solar radiation and an array oversize factor. This gives the amount of autonomy required for that location with a specific solar array power capacity.
