The Lagos State Waste Management Authority organised their fourth Medical Waste Summit, which was held on 26 and 27 October 2009 at the National Arts Theatre Iganmu, Lagos with the theme “Safe Management of Healthcare Waste: The Time is Now”.

The papers dwelled on the following topics:
  • Safety: Environmental and Health Implications of Health Care Waste
  • Financing Health Care Waste Management
  • Treatment Options in Health Care Waste Management
  • Medical Waste-Risks, Hazards, Treatment and Need for Awareness
  • Incineration as a Viable Option in the Effective Management of Health Care Wastes in Nigeria

  • Regulatory, Monitoring and Enforcement Issues in Health Care Waste (HCW) Management
  • Legislations in Health Care Waste Management

There were three different objectives identified that countries could adopt as part of their pandemic vaccination strategy:

  1. To protect the integrity of the health care system and the country's critical infrastructure;
  2. To reduce morbidity and mortality;
  3. To reduce the transmission of the pandemic virus within communities.

Countries could use a variety of vaccine deployment strategies to reach these objectives but any strategy should reflect the country’s epidemiologic situation, resources and ability to access vaccine, to implement mass vaccination in the targeted groups, and to use other non-vaccine mitigation measures. Such measures include both non-pharmaceutical measures, and pharmaceutical interventions, including antivirals. Under all circumstances, strengthening influenza surveillance in developing countries, particularly Africa, was considered important.

Here are WHO recommendations of this, based on advice from SAGE.

UNICEF has a vacancy for a Communication Specialist for Immunization, (Meningitis/New Vaccines), L-4, at its Dakar Regional Office, Senegal.

The incumbent will report to the Regional Adviser, Communication for Development, and work in close coordination with the Regional EPI Specialist. S/he will be responsible for assisting country offices and national governments in the design, management, execution, monitoring and evaluation of large-scale social and behaviour change communication strategies in support of immunization.
