Issue 26, 26 October 2009

Editorial Note

This week's digest is resource-rich. There are two new documents on efforts to strengthen the routine immunization system through the Reaching Every District approach in northern Nigeria from Jenny Sequeira and links to various technical documents related to immunization from India and E. Timor from Lora Shimp. In addition, Alison Brunier announces the publication of the State of the World's Vaccines and Immunization (third edition).

Prabir Chatterjee has a query regarding Ice-Lined Refrigerators (ILRs). And our regular contributor, Omesh Bharti, shares his research findings on whether non-polio enteroviruses are contributing to more cases of Acute Flacid Paralysis (AFP) in India.

It looks at the development and use of vaccines and at the safeguards that have been put in place to ensure their safety, efficacy, and quality. ...

The ever-increasing number of children getting paralysed in India is a matter of serious concern... (see the attachment) ... we need to look beyond polio eradication strategies to minimize the total number of children suffering paralysis in India and elsewhere in the world. I will appreciate more views on the topic and alternate hypotheses on the causes of increase in the number of paralytic children in the country, despite overall decrease in the number of polio cases.
