With 279 000 reported cases and 197 000 deaths per year, measles continues to be an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income countries. 1 In 2008, the World Health Assembly reaffirmed the goal to reduce mortality from measles by more than 90% in 2010, compared with rates from 2000. 2 Moreover, WHO's executive board has instructed its organisation to explore the feasibility of global measles elimination.
