OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The objective is to promote, coordinate, and implement technical cooperation activities to reduce the social and economic burden of communicable and non communicable diseases, focusing on the surveillance, prevention and control, in ways that are technically sound and appropriate for the culture and society. Strives to achieve sustainable impact through strengthened country capacity and effective inter-country collaboration; and to strengthen the coverage and quality of the health and vital statistics in the Region as well as the national capacity to monitor their health situation. Description of duties:
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Health Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control (HSD), and the direct supervisor of the Senior Advisor, IHR Alert and Response and Epidemic Diseases (HSD/IR), the incumbent is responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
a) Collaborate in the detection, risk assessment, and verification of acute public health threats of international concern posed by epidemics through official and un-official sources involving contacts with public health officials from Ministries of Health, WHO/HQ, Country Offices and other Areas, as well as partner centers of excellence;
b) Collaborate with WHO Regional and Country Offices to collect, assess, and verify information on potential public health emergencies of international concern, in line with the operational requirements of the International Health Regulations (IHR-2005);
c) Collaborate in the development and implementation of competencies-based training program on epidemic alert and response program; brief and provide training to Ministries of Health officers as required on System for Monitoring Public Health event (SIME);
d) Administer the Event Management System (EMS), including data management and data quality assurance;
e) Collaborate with the statistical analysis of Event Management System (EMS); analyze disease risk profiles, and participate in routine epidemiological reporting;
f) Support ongoing technical collaboration and operational coordination with partner institutions and agencies in event alert and response activities;
g) Assist in the management of the epidemic alert and response duty officer system providing for 24/7 coverage of communications as required by the IHR;
h) Perform other related duties, as assigned.
