Nationwide measles campaign launched in Yemen

The Government of Yemen in collaboration with UNICEF, WHO, USAID, ICRC and other partners Saturday launched a nationwide measles campaign in Sana’a, targeting all children under the age of ten – an estimated eight million.

This campaign comes in the wake of an outbreak of the disease in the past few months, with over 3600 reported cases and 126 children under the age of five confirmed dead.

This situation is unacceptable,” says UNICEF Representative Geert Cappelaere. “Measles is a preventable disease and Yemen was close to being declared measles free in 2010 with zero deaths.”

India opens malaria vaccine center

The news last year that the world's leading experimental malaria vaccine, known as RTS,S, was showing early promise in large-scale phase 3 testing reinvigorated the scientific community in its quest to control the devastating disease, which kills more than 1.2 million people globally each year according to the latest estimates (Lancet, 379, 413–431, 2012). But, in addition to developing products such as RTS,S that protect against the clinical manifestations of malaria, researchers also hope to create vaccines that disrupt the parasite's life cycle. To that end, two Seattle-based nonprofits have partnered with India's Gennova Biopharmaceuticals to help make such a transmission-blocking vaccine a reality.

More than 900 000 lives saved by protecting people living with HIV from TB

An estimated 910 000 lives were saved globally over six years by improving collaboration between TB and HIV services that protect people living with HIV from TB, according to global health impact figures released today. To follow up on the success of the 2004 initial guidance on TB and HIV, WHO is releasing today an updated global policy for joint prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB and HIV. TB is a leading killer of people living with HIV.

Sixteen kerosene coolers for ‘power’less BHUs

he health ministry received yesterday 16 kerosene refrigerators for distribution to basic health units without electricity to store vaccines as a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The refrigerators were handed over in Phuentsholing.

The kerosene refrigerator, which requires 30 litres of kerosene a month, has a storage tank and a chimney. “It has a burner that can be lit and will run the refrigerator for the whole day,” senior program officer, vaccine preventable disease program, Tshewang Dorji Tamang, said.

PATH and the World Health Organization (WHO) today announced the appointment of Dr. Marie-Pierre Préziosi as new director of the PATH/WHO Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP), effective today. A member of the MVP team since 2003, Dr. Preziosi most recently served as the Director of Clinical Development for MVP, as part of her role as Medical Officer at WHO.

"We are very pleased that Marie-Pierre has been chosen to lead the MVP. Her wealth of experience, technical know-how, and dedication will be an asset as she takes on this important role,” said Dr. Jean-Marie Okwo-Bele, Director of WHO’s Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals department. “We are excited to work with Marie-Pierre to strengthen our partnership and continue rolling out MenAfriVac in all 25 countries in Africa’s meningitis belt.”
