Grand Challenges Canada announces Rising Stars in Global Health Request for Proposals.  This unique program seeks to support emerging innovators from low– and lower-middle income countries. Grand Challenges Canada’s goal is to tap into “home grown” solutions to global health problems grounded in local intelligence, culture and conditions to solve some of the most persistent health challenges in the developing world through Integrated Innovation. Integrated Innovation is the coordinated application of scientific/technological, social and business innovation to develop solutions to complex challenges.

...The Rising Stars in Global Health program will provide $100,000 CAD for up to 30 successful proof-of-concept proposals. Up to 6 additional scale-up grants of up to $1 million CAD will be awarded to applicants who have most compellingly demonstrated success at the proof-of-concept stage.

There will be two rounds of Rising Stars in Global Health for a total of $18 million CAD. Of this amount, approximately $12 million CAD will be available for scale-up grants.

The deadline for proposals is March 23, 2012 11:59 p.m. EDT.  Proposals must include a visual representation--preferably a 2 minute video--that outlines the health problem, the proposed solution, and why it is innovative and bold.

The Health Information Technology and System (HITS) division of AHW is responsible for the development of a system wide performance management matrix approach that will enable the improved tracking of system performance and accountability of the health system. To support this role, highly specialized analytical, health economic forecasting, and evaluation techniques will be required to transform data into reliable and meaningful information in a way that is effective, and demonstrates the value of health service investments to be used by diverse audiences and decision makers. As part of HITS, the office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) will provide the introduction and implementation of new and innovative approaches to information management and technology to support the development of performance metrics and the business of the health system focusing on the Ministry and broader health community sectors. The CIO will lead the ministry and health system executives on identifying or renewing business development opportunities.

The Information Management branch of HITS provides strategic information systems planning and coordination of information management services which reflect the business priorities for the Ministry and the health system. The Information Management branch also directly provides, coordinates and guides the development and implementation of legislative requirements, policy, governance, and best practice to enable the secure management and exchange of information within the ministry and provincially. This branch is also accountable for providing leadership and direction in the provision of technology and information services for the Provincial Registries.

A key component of AHW’s mission includes setting the direction for public health, and in particular to ensure that individuals within the population are immunized. Adverse event details is companion information associated with an immunization that is collected to trigger further investigation to ensure the continued safety of vaccines and prevent individuals from experiencing adverse events from future immunizations. As such, Adverse Event Following Immunization data collected is to improve patient safety and reduce the likelihood of further events.

The Health Policy Action Fund (HPAF) invites Civil Society Organisations from 30 IHP+ countries to submit proposals for funding of health policy work at national level. The grants will fund work over an 18-month period starting in April 2012, and have a maximum of US$ 30,000 per grantee.

The call for proposals opens 18 January 2012. The closing date for receiving applications is 17h00 (Pretoria Time) on 28 February 2012. Forms can be downloaded from the HPAF website. Proposals can be sent to cjacob@oxfam.org.uk.

We strongly encourage CSO Health Coalitions and Networks working on a broad range of health policy issues at national level to apply. The HPAF does not fund implementation of health interventions.
