In this photo, residual ash from a locally fabricated 2-chamber brick auto-combustion incinerator at a district hospital in Rwanda. Along with needles, you can clearly identify a lab slide, a vaccine vial, and a pneumococcal syringe casing. Glass will melt and get sterilized when incinerated, but crushing is also needed, as is a fuel source for heat. Photo taken in Rwanda in 2009 while on assignment for PATH, in collaboration with JSI and the MMIS project.
